The Sum of our Fears

Wagga, Duck season 9:30AM

The man adjusted the lense on his camera, and took another picture of the many ducks in the lake before him. His name was Robert Makenzie, and he was thirty years old, married, with two young daughters.
He stepped back to get a better view of the lake, but tripped and fell on the soft, marshy ground.
He sighed in dismay, but look up at the source of a strange sound, before him was a duck; sick or injured he couldn’t tell.
He got up and sighed, it seems the poor duck couldn’t fly so he picked it up and walked to his car. There he wrapped it in a blanket, lay it down on the front seat and drove home.

Wagga, Makenzie household 5:12PM

“Is it going to be OK daddy?”
“I don’t know sweetheart” Replied Robert, patting his youngest daughter on the head.
“You go along and play, let the duck get some rest”. As the door closed, Robert bent forward and stroked the ducks neck. He wiped sweat from his forehead, feeling as though he was coming down with a slight cold.
Suddenly the bird screeched, fluttering its wings madly. A few drops of blood splattered on Roberts face, then the duck fell silent and went limb. Robert hastily rushed to the bathroom and wiped the blood from his face.
“Honey, are you OK?” asked his wife from outside the bathroom door.
“Yes I’m fine; I’ll be out in a minute.”
Robert walked into the kitchen, his wife were waiting for Robert.
“I’m just taking the kids out for tea and then we will go to the movies”. She kissed him on the lips, and opened the doors
“We’ll be back by 8:30PM

Wagga, Cinema 7:42PM

It was nearing the end of the movie when the wife of Robert started coughing. Little did she know that she was spreading the most deadly disease in history?
Her two daughters screamed as she groaned and collapsed to the ground.

Wagga, Makenzie household, 7:52PM

Robert felt worse than what he had ever felt in his life.
WATER………NEED WATER
He got in the car and headed towards the hospital. All of a suddenly there was a screech of tires as he smashed into an oncoming vehicle, Roberts’s blood spraying EVERYWHERE!

Wagga, Hospital District 7:56PM

Doctor Fiona Laurence strode into the emergency room. “What the hell has happened here?”
A younger nurse replies,
“She collapsed in the cinema. The doctors believe she has a virus; they had to revive her just 3 minutes ago. Her husband has just died in a car accident. “We believe that they had the sickness, and their daughters have just been diagnosed with it.”
Fiona gasped as she saw the pale woman lying in the hospital bed.
“Alert the authorities, we might have a serious pandemic on our hands, and someone, damn it, give me a blood sample!”

Wagga, Hospital District briefing room, 9:26PM

“The virus the Makenzie family seemed to have caught is the most terrible virus we’ve ever seen” The man paused, and then continued
“We’re dealing with a major pandemic. The virus has an incubation period of just over two hours. It attacks all major and vital organs including the skin tissue. This overwhelming piece of information suggests that the virus has recently mutated. You thought it was bad before well get this people, it now has evolved enough to become airborne.”
Doctor Laurence raised her hand.
“How deadly are we talking?”
The man sighed. “Mrs. Makenzie and her daughters will be dead before morning. This virus kills phenomenally fast. The government has been informed and the military are taking action. No one is allowed in or out of Wagga until we have an all clear. We can only hope that no one else has caught the disease. The government is studying Mr. and Mrs. Makenzie’s blood samples. GOD, HELP US ALL.”

Water treatment Facility, 10:39AM

Mr. Bates was one of the many, including Mrs. Makenzie who was at the movies last night. He was double-checking the water flow when he felt a hot wave of nausea, and fell into the water unconscious.

The Advea Le Laurence Hotel, 10:42AM

Fiona Laurence laughed as she played with her twelve year old daughter and 9-year-old son. Her husband, Mark owned the Advea le Laurence 4 star hotel. She stopped as her mobile rang.
“Fiona? Its Alice, come down to the hospital IMMEDIATELY!”

Hospital, 10:45AM

The hospital was flooded with the cinema victims. There were so many that Fiona didn’t know what to do. The army had taken control, telling everyone to stay at home and if there were any signs of sickness to come down to the hospital right away. All Fiona could do now was inject Penicillin, or give the patients some water. Every now and then one of the patients would shake in a fit and throw up blood (the sign of death)

Water treatment Facility, 11:13AM

Mrs. Bates collapsed. Her eldest son, Eighteen years of age, called out,
“MICHAEL”
Michael, thirteen years of age, ran into the room then gasped,
“Oh no… we’ve got it”
Then turned around, ran out the door and never stopped running.
Many more people started to fall sick, even the doctors. It was as if the whole town was infected…

Michael looked up to the sound of his older brother yelling his name; his brother stumbled over, tears streaming from his eyes.
“Michael, mums at the hospitals shes……shes……… shes dying Michael”
Tears streamed down his face, yet his face was hardened with determination.
There were countless patients all lined up in rows that seemed to go on forever.
Michael overlooked the crowd then his eyes fell upon his mother. As soon as Michaels mother saw him she started bursting into tears then said,
“You shouldn’t have come here; no you'll catch the virus”
Michael smiled “ I know mum, but I wanted-“ his voice faltered as tears streamed down his face like a never-ending waterfall.
“I wanted to say……goodbye” He squeezed his mum’s hand.

Several hours later Michael’s mum died and moments later Michael died on top of her leaving no trace of life but a puddle of infected blood.

The Doctors studied Robert Makenzie’s body. There wasn’t much left of him, yet it was apparent that he was dying from the virus when he was killed, yet what they found was amazing.
Twenty minutes later every single healthy doctor was called up to attend a meeting that was of the utmost importance.
“We now know that Robert Makenzie was the first victim of this monstrosity situation, this virus originated from the avian flu yet somehow mutated inside him from other unnatural causes. Robert had another very serious virus inside of him from another cause, In which case the viruses attacked each other, which we are currently getting an anti-serum to extract it to the army immediately, but with no success. We are not getting funded from the military to mass produce this anti- serum because the military have come t the conclusion of bombing the Wagga district if we do not act upon this devastating problem soon. People the fate of this entire district is depending on us, if we fail we all fail, May god show mercy. ”
“WHAT ARE YOU SAYING THE MILITARY CAN’T DO THAT, CAN THEY?” shouted an outraged doctor from the crowd.
Doctor Laurence ignored the comment and sighed, “How long do we have”
“24 hours but we have to act fast, every second wasted means innocent lives are being destroyed by the virus.”

The hospital was now flooded with sick and dying people. It was not a healthy environment with the blood everywhere. So Mark Laurence came to the conclusion of opening up his hotel to house the patients, making sure that his 2 children stayed in his family suit at ALL times, forbidden to come out. It had only been three hours since the hotel had been open that his wife started to feel ill. A sudden wave of terror had swept over mark, she was a qualified doctor that had looked after the patients, she would of made sure she was 100% safe, how did she get it?. The hotel was nearly full already and it was then that they were told to turn of their water supply. The dead man was found rotting in the water treatment facility were a faint blood line slowly drifted from his mouth then disappearing into the pink, infected water, this distributed to the amount of sick patients and to the doctors health.

The next day the army ordered to get the healthy people to safety, including Mark. Mark grabbed his children and rushed them to the convoy then told them
“It’s OK kids mommy and daddy will be fine…”
Then Mark went back to his wife's room.
“What are you doing here sweetie?” Asks Fiona
All the healthy and slightly ill people had been ordered to evacuate to the convoy, including mark. It was too late however for people like Fiona Laurence and many other sick others.
“I came here to be with you” replied mark”
“But your not sick, your healthy, why are you here?”
Mark just smiled and kissed her. It was a kiss devoid of any emotion; it was just a kiss for………a farewell.

Mark and Fiona walked outside, held each other’s hands and looked upon the horizon and watched the bomb drop. As the bomb hit the ground there was a small flash and marks tightened his grip on Fiona’s hand, as she did with him, then there was a blinding flash and a loud explosion and then the light enveloped them. As the smoke cleared there was nothing left but a crater, devoid of life…

LETTER TO THE GENERAL

Dear Mr. General,

All cases of the Elimura virus have been eradicated. Al patients who were slightly ill have been fully revived using the anti – serum with no side effects. It was apparent that the virus started of as the avian flu and when it entered Robert Makenzie’s blood it slightly adapted to his already tainted blood therefore mutating. But the thing that mutated it also destroyed it. It was found that the wild ducks had been carrying and spreading the disease, so action was taken and all ducks and birds in the vicinity of Wagga were rounded up and cremate and cremated. Your decision to go through with operation clean sweep was a success

All is well…

Two Days Later…

A family (tourists) was driving to Victoria and was bypassing Wagga when they came across a sick bird on the road. As they slowly came to a halt a little girl jumped out and picked up the sick little duck and kissed it, then turned to her mum and said,
“Mummy it’s hurt, can we keep it until it gets better ”
Her mum just smiled and picked it up, wrapped the sick bird in the blanket, gave it to her daughter and drove off.
